I few days ago I came across a post by Jackie – ‘Taking a Moment to Notice the Wounded Cicada’ – (http://Jackie2759125.newsvine.com/_news/2012/06/18/12282767-taking-a-moment-to-notice-the-wounded-cicada ), which made me think: ‘I can so relate to this…’.
I often rescue insects, worms, and spiders. Some people find this behavior of mine peculiar. One of my colleagues once made a joke – “Hey, there’s a bee drowning in the kitchen sink – go rescue it… I rushed into the kitchen… It was too late – the bee’s wings were hopelessly wet, and she didn’t even look like a bee anymore. I felt sad for her.
How many times Mother Nature made us, humans, feel small and helpless in the face of catastrophic events such as earthquakes, hurricanes or tornados?! In the midst of these uncontrollable forces, didn’t we wish and pray some Powers from Above came to our rescue and saved us against all the odds? Would not we feel grateful if some Strong and Kind Giant chose not to overlook our “little” existence, took us in his arms and brought to safety?
When I see little bugs, birds or pets that could use a miracle, I gladly jump at the opportunity to perform that little miracle for them. To me, it’s more than just being kind – it makes me feel like I am a part of the Goodness that is always present in the world.
I am glad I am not alone feeling compassion toward other creatures neighboring with us on this beautiful Planet Earth. Obviously, it’s not just about insects – it’s about Humankind treating our fellow animal-cohabiters, as well as each other, with respect and empathy. It’s about extending our help to those who are weaker or have lost control over their destiny.
Every time we help an older person to cross the street or carry a luggage, every time we give up our seat for a pregnant woman, or even when we just grace a stranger with our smile – we bring more Goodness into the world, we make it better, we make a difference.
I mind you, there’s a little bit of God in each of us!

Well said. I have rescued earthworms from wet sidewalks for years. Turns out, my mother and grandmother did the same thing, unbeknownst to me. It is the Spirit inside of us, planted there by God. And it manifests in little ways. Not so little, to the worm.

Yeah … I’m guilty of rescuing spiders out of the bathtub, and bumblebees from between the window panes, moving worms off the road when it rains. I do swat mosquitoes though … gotta draw the line somewhere I suppose!

thankfully there are still some of us in this world. I go out of my way to rescue whatever I can whenever even if it is a lowly silverfish running around in the bathroom! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten out of my car and stopped traffic for birds, turtles, ducks and the like. So many need our help!

Just to know that there are so many people doing the same thing… I rescued a baby wood cockroach from the top of my laptop and popped it outside this morning, and then found a tiny snail crawling up the side of the bath ( why), which was gently re-homed. And I have to say I rescue wasps… don’t feel I can discriminate !!!

What a wonderful post! I totally hear you. Poeple made jokes of me when I would safe insects from drowning or being stepped on when I was little. I don’t know if they still do as I still give a helping hand to insects (and others) but don’t resonate with those energies mentioned above, much, anymore. – What if God was one of us? What if God was within each and every one of us?

We all were given our life for a reason, and insects and other creatures enjoy their moments on Earth as much as we enjoy ours. Their life is unique, and can only be experienced once, just like life of any human being.

A friend of mine used to say that each of us is bringing their unique part to the circle and that if one is missing, the circle would be incomplete. Due to his native american heritage he also believed that we all are a part of our mother earth because our body is made of her to house our soul for the expirience of this life. I can relate to this view of the world a lot and I never believed that this excludes animals, plants or minerals. (I guess, nor did he.)
We can access YouTube in Germany but we also have an organisation called GEMA who puts themselves into a position of protecting the artistic expression for the artist. Unfortunately they do not even ask the artists if they want to be protected like that and I don’t believe that their extra fees and the laws blocking content on YouTube really helps anybody but themselves. Some bigger music coorperations seem to step into the same manner like GEMA, also. Anyway, I actually found a version of the video that I could watch from here. 🙂 It’s really a peace of beauty!

This is such a warm posting. I, too, have a soft heart for earth’s creatures. Sometimes I will see an itsy bug and wonder to myself how many people would quickly squash its small life and never think twice. I look at it and decide it is doing nothing irritating or harmful so why should I not give it another day to live. I keep a glass jar on the porch and will capture the little critters and put them back outside:>)

Thank you for such a beautiful post. It made me think of my daughter who is just like you with mother nature. While I don’t think anything about it, she takes the time to help those in need. I feel when big things, bad things happen in our family, or community or in the world, we are reminded to be kind and help one another. But so quickly and easily we get caught up in our day to day living that we forget the promise we made to ourselves to treat every person a little bit kinder, a little bit gentler, than we did before.

Great post. I rescue bees on the beach. They get sucked down with the air current and then the moisture gets on their wings so they cannot fly away. Part of my reason is my own fear of drowning. I cannot stand the thought of anyone or anything else suffocating in the water. Or in the case of a fish, suffocating on land. I love your point of how often we wish for someone to save us.
So you’re putting yourself in a bee’s shoes:) – it’s called empathy. I love that! I think it should be a norm to offer help to others if you are in position to do so. It feels great, too! So by helping others, we are also obviously helping ourselves. Thank you so much for sharing your story.

I think all life is sacred, and everything has a role to play. So and so may not like spiders, but they need to consider how spiders eat mosquitoes. Such a relief to know there’s someone else out there besides myself who does this! Now, I may not be that extreme, I’m highly allergic to bee stings so wouldn’t risk rescuing one but the rest of them, I’m okay with. I may be terrified like a little girl but I’d rather safely escort them out of my house than to kill them.

But if I am in position to help without putting my health in danger, I’ll always help. LOVE this post!! I am also an insane rescuer of bugs. Just the other day, there was a weird green one that looked like a leaf with feet–I had to make sure that he made his way across the church parking lot without getting squashed.
But for the grace of God, I could have been a bug. I wonder if they are insulted by the name “bug?”

Love how you put it and love all the little animals except SPIDERS despite the joys that they bring!! Maybe it’s weird, but when I collect all the slugs and snails that eat my shrubs, plants and flowers, rather than ….. them, I deposit them in my compost bin and they eat away merrily until ……. and then I spread the rich compost! I am not sure I understand what is it you are doing…
Sorry for being so complex. We have a compost bin in our garden and each year we produce a very rich crumbly organic compost. Slugs are a constant scourge because they eat all my lovely shrubs so, rather than putting down slug pellets which are harmful to birds, I collect the slugs and put them in with the rotting compost. The slugs eventually perish and no doubt contribute to the rich compost thereby creating the cycle of life all over again.
Sounds like a smart move:).
So true….loved your post. Empathy is a virtue and not everyone possesses it. We should all strive to be empathetic and to support our fellow co-inhabitants that are weaker than us.

Thanks for this beautiful reminder to honour the life of all beings, even the small ones. I try not to harm insects, and I try to catch and carry them outside if they happen to enter the house. I do like my “pet spider” by the front door step, who keeps check on many uninvited guests. 🙂

Absolutely! I couldn’t have put it any better. When I was in elementary school, I felt the same way. I would try to help different insects that would get trapped in our house (this was in the country in Korea at the time) I didn’t do it because I just wanted to, but I only imagined myself to be in the same situation and thought what I thought was the right thing. I rescued a spider once. It was on a dandelion bloom, and those land upside down in the water, so the spider was clinging to the top of the stem and that’s where I found it as I floated along the top of the lake. I carried it back to shore and the spider was very grateful.

I am the same way. I feel compelled to save any small creature I can, even small insects. One time, I even rescued a bee whose wing was caught in an old spider web. Being careful of the stinger, I gently pinched off the web that was holding the bee, and it flew away. Fortunately, I was not stung; I think it knew it needed help to get free.
Great post, and I am so happy to hear of others who take time to care for these small yet wonderful creatures around us.

Yes, ‘Otrazhenie’ translates as ‘Reflection’ from Russian. Have never heard Aloha used in New York. Nice word. Very interesting to see how cultures adopt such nice words: aloha in Hawaii, alofa in Samoa, aroha in Maori – all meaning peace, compassion, love and mercy. Hopefully, such words will help to improve understanding between cultures living on this planet.
‘Aloha’ means many things – ‘Love’, ‘Hello’ and ‘Ciao’ are some of them:-).
well said! its about time somebody like you came out openly to profess what they do….ive been doing the same as you for years…if i find a spider in the house, i try and pick it up carefully before putting it outside again….if a wasp or bee comes inside, i dont automatically kill it, no…i get a hold of it in some cloth and gently let it out…stuff like that! i dont know about god and all that however….ive seen too much in my life to believe there is a god who looks after everybody….i just dont know…but as you say…a little goodness never did anybody any harm….what lovely, heart-warming write up….!

I lived for eight years within the 100-year-old, crumbling, ivy-covered, centipede-infested campus (so many beautiful memories!), and every morning, the mossy walkways would be covered in dew and full of snails. I only accidentally stepped on one of them (I still hear the crunch of my sneakers on its shell) and I stood there, watched it writhe away to its death, feeling very sorry. From then on, I made it my mission to remove the snails on the humans’ path and put them down on the grass every morning. And every time a minor miracle happened to me (e.g. a teacher happened to ask me a question I knew the answer to, or I won in a student competition for poetry or something), I kinda always felt the rescued snails had something to do with it, that it was their tiny karmas, collected to give a positive push to the universe to treat me a little better. ^_^
What an empowering story! That snail who perished under your foot didn’t die in vain – there was a lesson there to learn, – you’ve saved so many other lives of snails because of it.

This is a really beautiful and inspirational post, nyparrot. Thank you for following my blog, and I’m sorry it’s taken me such a long time to visit yours. I’m glad I did. My husband makes a conscious effort to do one kind thing each day. Sometimes opportunities just present themselves, other times he has to “go out of his way” to do something nice. I’ve seen how appreciative – and surprised – people are by his random acts of kindness. Like this post, his actions are inspirational. There’s plenty of room for more “humankind” in this world. But it’s also so uplifting to see people come together during a crisis – like the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Sometimes, though, I just wish we didn’t need a crisis for people to help one another.

i’ve rescued hundreds of insects and spared dozens, from death maybe because of my own inner dismay where death is concerned, but mostly because i appreciate life’s preciousness and the beauty of mother nature. after reading this post i have been encouraged to boldly face those that find my quirks wierd or unusual because to be honest who’s right is it to determine what is usual??

Superb post. I’m exactly the same and, although I’m petrified of worms, for instance, I will always get a stick or piece of dry grass and move them off wet pavements and roads. I hate to see suffering and, to me, all lives are equal. I do have to admit to killing the odd wasp if it’s stung me though!
By the way, I almost went for the same theme as your blog as it looks so nice and let me have wider photos but I couldn’t find out how people would get back to the ‘home’ page from any other pages I set up as it didn’t appear to have one?
You remind me of my son. He nurtures living things. Even in Kindergarten, the teacher commented that he spent his recesses building habitats for the ants. He still runs the ‘catch and release’ program for flies that get in the house.
Beautiful thoughts of Love and compassion nyparrot, God did create us in His Likness so you are right we have part of Him in us, which means in the heart of all mankind is His Love, absence of Love is evil, everything God made was good, man messed it up, if we want to be rescued eternally we need to trust God as a child Trusts their parents… God is Love and can do no evil, He Loves you and me and all his children with a life enriching passion , He sent Jesus to rescue us eternaly, to set us free, in His arms we are shilded and protected, regardless of what happens to our outer bodies.

I cannot disagree with you. God, of course, is within us. We were made in His likeness. I don’t have too much sympathy for bugs, but our pets are important to me and, every time I make myself go out of my way to help someone else even in the smallest way, I gain more than the help I gave.
